Battle of Long Island

It was August 27, 1776, in Long Island,New York. It was the largest battle of the Revolutionary War. The British were the first to attack on that morning. The colonists General was George Washington, and the British General was William Howe. The British sent a small force to the center of the colonists defense. While the colonists were focused on the small attack the British came from the East and attacked. Instead of finishing the fight the British leaders halted the attack, because they didn’t want to lose any more men. On August 29th Washington tried to save his army. He told his men to stay quiet and make their way across East River to Manhattan, but when the British woke up they were gone. The Colonists were outnumbered by the British 20,000 people to 10,000 people. The British army killed 300 colonists, wounded 800, and captured 1,079. On the other hand the colonists killed 64 of the British, wounded 293, and captured 31. I remember it like it was yesterday.
